AK Steel has an opportunity available for a Refractory Engineer Intern at its Corporate Headquarters in West Chester, OH. Gain “real-world” experience in a fast paced and challenging business environment of a Fortune 500 Company. You will work closely with an experienced Engineering team - assisting with in-depth reviews and analysis of various refractory ceramics projects to optimize and improve steel making performance. You will apply textbook methodologies to real world scenarios and gain a broad understanding of the Company’s use and management of steel industry refractory products and systems by assisting in product trials and upgrading current practices.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Participate in bench marking & data analysis of the performance of the various refractory systems at the steel producing locations, to identify deficiencies and the potential for improvement - opportunity to gain office and field experience.
Assist in developing product trial protocols and participate in performance evaluation and auditing field installations.
Assist in planning refractory support requirements for upcoming outage projects and planned downturns.
Assist in creation of bid packages for upgrading of various refractory supply agreements and introduction of new refractory technology.
Assist in the auditing of shop floor performance refractory system procedures.
Work with refractory project manager on special projects, including attending strategy meetings, project/product review assessments, and other projects and assignments.
Enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program and completed the refractory ceramics and/or furnace design related courses and a minimum sophomore level student.
Working towards a degree related to Ceramic Engineering, Material Science, Metallurgy, or Industrial Engineering, with interest in Industrial Engineering, Metallurgy/Material Science/Refractory Ceramics.
Available to work up to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
Strong data analysis skills, ability to think “outside-the-box”, and challenge existing processes and procedures.
Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively present findings and make recommendations to management.
Time management skills in performing multiple projects with various team members.
Proficient with Microsoft Office products.
