The Clean Energy Programs team advances the full lifecycle of customer facing distributed energy resource (DER) programs and services (EE, DR, DG, EV, ES) through research, analytics, evaluation and market strategies that foster our clients’ success in a clean energy future.

We are seeking a Managing Consultant to join our Energy Customers & Markets group as part of the Process Evaluation and Customer Experience Team. This work will support primary research on a wide range of program evaluation activities, particularly in the field of distributed energy resource (DER) strategies including energy efficiency, renewable energy, and demand management. This includes involvement and interaction with utility companies, program implementers, government agencies, industry representatives, trade organizations, end-use customers, and efficiency advocates.

This individual will be tasked with leading and working with a team of consultants conducting survey research tasks a part of data collection projects that not only gather valid and reliable data, but do so using the latest best practices in telephone and online data collection and project management.

Specific activities may include:

  • Conducting and directing background research

  • Developing efficient sampling frames and selection criteria

  • Identifying appropriate survey methodologies

  • Designing and critiquing survey instruments

  • Advising on survey programming design and overseeing testing

  • Crafting survey fielding schedules

  • Overseeing data collection quality and cost by careful review of production and cost reports

  • Developing training materials for survey interviewers

  • Troubleshoot sampling and survey construction issues

  • Evaluating subcontractor survey efforts and coordinating contracting

  • Employing advanced techniques for analyzing and interpreting survey and secondary data

  • Lead project meetings with programmers, statisticians, call center supervisors, and other survey research staff

  • Preparing progress reports to internal and external parties on survey progress

  • Participating in the project management process, including developing budgets and evaluation plans

  • Initiate and lead research projects

  • Continuous improvement evaluation of DER programs

  • Assessing utility customer experience with DER technologies and programs

  • Developing customer engagement strategies for utilities, government, and energy companies

  • Analyzing technology trends with a focus on how utility customers experience said technologies

  • Communicating solutions and new strategies to clients through reports and presentations

  • Staying abreast of survey industry trends and helping strategize new approaches that integrate days quality with cost effectiveness

Persons seeking this position should possess an intellectually curious spirit, be interested in solving puzzles, answering big questions, and be passionate about collaborating with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds across the country. Qualified candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • MA/MS degree with an emphasis on human-centric research and design, analysis, logical reasoning, and/or problem solving (e.g., social science, economics, market research, etc.)

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in survey data collection methods, equivalent internship assignments, and/or equivalent Master’s level projects or practicums

  • Demonstrated experience with research design and execution and evidence of ability to develop scientific stature in survey methods, such as presentations at professional conferences, publications in peer-review journals, and service to the profession

  • Knowledge of complex survey and sample design approaches

  • Experience with CATI mixed-mode software and Qualtrics, or other online survey software

  • Experience conducting primary and secondary research, including, in-depth interviews, logic modeling, and group facilitation

  • Experience implementing survey research projects with multidisciplinary teams

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as SPSS or other statistical software, like R

  • Experience in client communications and relationship management

  • Experience with preparing for and presenting study findings to clients

  • Ability to manage multiple time-sensitive priorities without diminished effectiveness

  • Strong interest in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Survey Methodology or a related field with course work in survey methods and at least 5 years of work experience in survey methodology

  • Experience conducting focus groups, developing journey maps, and advanced data visualization techniques

  • Successful record of contributing to proposals and responding to RFPs

  • Frequently communicates with clients and coworkers and must be able to share information effectively

  • Strong conceptual, as well as quantitative and qualitative analytical skills

  • Work as a member of a team as well as be a self-motivator with ability to work independently

  • Flexibility and responsiveness in managing multiple projects in sometimes high-pressure situations simultaneously

  • Usually remains stationary for the majority of the day

  • Regularly uses close visual acuity and operates computer equipment to prepare and analyze and transmit data

  • Travel is required
