Summary

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. This position is located in Zion National Park, in the Administration Division. Please visit find a parkfor additional park information.

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime temperatures averaging 95 to 100 in the summer and 55 in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 in the summer to 30 in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah located 2 miles from Park Headquarters. Full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles) and in Cedar City, Utah (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane with bus service provided. Dixie College is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City.

Who May Be Considered:

Recent Graduates who in the previous 2 years have completed a degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. Veterans precluded by a military service obligation have up to 6 years after completion of degree or certificate to apply.

This position is for Recent Graduates who have completed a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous 2 years. Note: (1) Certain veterans precluded from applying within the timeframe due to a military service obligation have up to 6 years from completing their education to apply; (2) Applicants who completed their educational program requirements after December 27, 2010 will have a full 2 years of eligibility beginning on the date the final regulations became effective, July 10, 2012.

Responsibilities

This position operates in the Division of Administration providing IT assistance and technical support to all employees in the three park Zion NP zone (including Pipe Spring NM and Cedar Breaks NM).

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Install, test, and direct the operation and installation of software and computer hardware which includes servers, personal computers, printers, and other peripheral equipment.
  • Troubleshoot system and equipment errors and connectivity problems and resolve the majority of problems.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain the stability of communications lines and equipment.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot LAN components such as routers, hubs, switches, and servers.
  • Install, test, and configure network workstations and peripherals. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Travel Required

Occasional travel - Travel may be required to attend trainings, conferences, workshops, and/or field visits. You may be required to obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Recent Graduate Program Requirements:
  • Students MUST submit transcripts with conferred or degree earned date (unofficial transcripts are acceptable). If selected, official transcripts will be required.
  • An Individual Development Plan (IDP) will be completed within 45 days of appointment to track the Recent Graduates' career planning, professional development, and training activities.
  • Selectee will be required to sign Recent Graduates Participant Agreement.
  • Within the first year of employment, the incumbent will be provided a minimum of 40 formal hours of training.
  • The incumbent will be assigned a mentor within 90 days of appointment.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE:

For GS-05:At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: providing technical support to users on the operation of personal computers, peripherals, and application software; troubleshooting and resolving hardware and software errors and connectivity problems; set up and installation of personal computers; installing computer hardware upgrades, peripherals, application software and software upgrades; knowledge of network operating systems. You must include hours per week worked.

For GS-07: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT. EDUCATION:

For GS-05: Successful completion of at least a bachelor's degree or higher degree with major study in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. In order to qualify for this position based on education, you must submit transcripts.

For GS-07: Successful completion of 1 year (18 semester/27 quarter credits) of graduate-level education DIRECTLY related to the position as listed above for the GS-05 or Superior Academic Achievement. Superior academic achievement is based on one of the following: (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society member. In order to qualify for this position based on education, you must submit transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institutionwith your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

This is an excepted service, intense 1-year on-the-job training and developmental experience appointment under the NPS Pathways Recent Graduates Program. The selected applicant will be require to complete a Participant Agreement in which it shall document the anticipated start and end dates for this developmental appointment. The agency may noncompetitively convert a Recent Graduate who is a U.S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Recent Graduate successfully completes the 1 year developmental program and meets the OPM Qualification Standards for the targeted occupational series.

The full performance level (FPL) of the target position that the Recent Graduate can be non-competitively promoted to is a GS-09.
