The Preuss School is a charter middle and high school dedicated to providing a rigorous college prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. As a department within Academic Affairs, The Preuss School also serves as a model school to study and develop best practices in the preparation of low-income, urban students for college admission.

The Volunteer Coordinator position has responsibility for developing and managing the Preuss School Parent Program (parent volunteers and Parent Teacher Association), Mentorship Program, and Tutorial & Student Internship Program. Through a variety of activities, the incumbent promotes strategic collaboration with external partners, and engages key external stakeholders in support of Preuss programs and goals.

The coordinator provides a broad range of services focused on the following objectives:

• Identify and secure opportunities to advance Preuss priorities.

• Develop and execute programs and activities to inform key partners and stakeholders.

• Raise awareness of Preuss with local, national and occasionally international partners and develop new strategic partnerships to advance priorities.

• Create and maintain relationships with industry partners and promote innovation and technology initiatives.

• Engage, strengthen, and support Preuss alumni and create and leverage opportunities for alumni to remain engaged with Preuss.

• Develop and monitor systems to recruit, train, and manage details of all volunteer programming.

  • Occasional working on weekends and evenings.

  • Bilingual Spanish speaking is required.

  • Working knowledge of risk management in a K-12 environment. Familiarity with marketing, publications, facilities and database.

  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating programs and/or volunteers.

  • Knowledge of concepts and principles of building and maintaining effective relations with a variety of alumni and other key volunteer constituencies.

  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including tact and political acumen to effectively represent the institution.

  • Bilingual/biliterate (Spanish) communication skills and political acumen, including skill in effectively representing The Preuss School UC San Diego.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze information, problems and procedures to effectively identify relevant concerns and formulate or implement alternatives and solutions.

  • Experience with, and ability to develop and use, computer applications and capabilities to create and maintain databases, and produce correspondence and reports i.e., Word, Excel, Access. Ability to assess most efficient means of retrieving information.

  • Ability to work with a high level of independence, prioritize assignments and departmental needs to meet deadlines. Ability to use initiative, creativity and resourcefulness to accomplish duties.

  • Analytical and critical thinking skills. Skill to exercise effective control of situations or events in the absence of higher authority and ability to make recommendations or decisions that affect office operations and activities.

  • Understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.
