National University Northern Region Career Advisor in Sacramento, California

Position Summary: The Northern Region Career Advisor, located in the Rancho Cordova, serves the students and alumni of the Northern California region including East Bay, San Jose and JFKU. This position provides critical support to students and alumni in professional career development, outreach and establishing partnerships with employers and developing programs/workshops tailored to meet student and alumni needs in the region. Serves as a liaison to Alumni Relations for events and alumni association meetings.

Essential Functions: Career Counseling and Advisement

  • Conduct individual and group career coaching and consultation to regional students and alumni to include: resume development and review, cover letter preparation, interview preparation, networking resources, career exploration, business etiquette, salary negotiation and job and internship search strategies.

  • Provide online career counseling to students and alumni.

  • Administer and interpret career-related tests and inventories to assess abilities, interests, and to identify career options for students and alumni.

  • Maintain updated records of meetings with students, students? career advancement and employment activities.

  • Gather, track and ensure that students complete employment surveys and student satisfaction survey.

  • Share the responsibility of conducting weekly online Resume Development workshop and the online Interview workshop with other members of the CS team.

Internship & Event Planning

  • Identifies, builds and coordinates regional partnerships and internships appropriate to majors with JFKU and NU schools/colleges and employers, locally, state-wide, and internationally for students.

  • Monitors, evaluates, and maintains existing internships in the region and develops additional internship opportunities to address the needs across academic programs in the region.

  • Develops business/employer contacts to create job opportunities in the Northern region.

  • Strong knowledge of GradLeaders, and ability to support employers with posting opportunities in the job portal to connect with students/alumni seeking employment.

  • Plans, coordinates and implements career fairs, events, panel discussions, and related workshops and events for the Northern region through key collaboration with employers and regional NU offices.

  • In conjunction with Alumni Relations and Student Services, host professional networking events, career-related workshops and mentor programs to engage students, alumni and working professionals in the region.

  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of regional career-related handouts and other career services marketing materials.

Outreach, Coordination & Management

  • Collaborates with the Career Services staff in San Diego and the other regional career advisors to create services, programs, and events relevant to student/alumni needs.

  • Demonstrates labor market and industry knowledge pertaining to the region; familiarity with fastest growing occupations and companies hiring in the area.

  • Represents Career Services in local and professional associations. Serves on University committees as needed.

  • Manages and maintains relationships with faculty in the region for job opportunities for students and alumni and relevant program planning.

Requirements: Education & Experience

  • Master?s degree in counseling, education or related field preferred, bachelor?s degree in the stated field required

  • Minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of experience in career services with some experience in higher education.

Technical / Functional Skills

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Computer skills in MS Office and CSO/GradLeader and other career-related technologies.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Valid driver?s license

  • Skills in educational and career counseling.

  • Knowledge of employment trends and current job market information.

  • Knowledge of resume construction, job search strategies, career resources and internet resources.

  • Corporate relations experience preferred.
