The incumbent is a GS 13 Social Work Supervisor at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond VA, 1A tertiary facility, with the MHPCI, BHL and 4 CBOC's. This position provides administrative oversight and coordinates clinical operations for the MHPCI program, MH and Primary Care social work services at 4 CBOC locations to include the coordination of multidisciplinary teams along with utilization and oversight of Behavioral Health Laboratory (BHL) at two locations.

Observes workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques through assigning peer reviews and completing FPPE and OPPEs for credentialed staff. Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance assisting to resolve systems issues as needed. Works to resolves informal complaints and grievances. Develops work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. Invokes disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated by the Chief of Social Work. Assures that staff receive training in areas specific to their duty assignments. Supervises employees to accomplish the work of the organization within MHPCI, BHL and the 4 CBOC's. Exercises supervisor authorities and responsibilities involving work assignment and review, as well as the administrative and personnel management functions relative to the staff supervised. Performs a wide range of services and provides technical assistance to State, local, and private agencies, and universities. Technical assistance provided to monitor activities and program reviews, and the development and analysis of information. In addition, the incumbent uses sound judgment in the interpretation of trends and patterns; the application of guidelines; and the recommendation of program enhancements. Performs program analysis, development, review, research, design, and works with various stakeholder internal and external to the VA. Basic Requirements: * United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. * Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. * Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Supervisory Social Workers: For supervisors, grades are determined by the scope of responsibility, the complexity of the social work services provided by supervisees, the composition of the staff supervised, (e.g. professional staff, multidisciplinary staff, tours of duty, geographical disbursement, etc.), and the amount of time spent in personnel management functions.
Grade Determinations: GS-13 Supervisory Social Worker- Supervisory Social Workers at the GS-13 grade level typically supervise a significant number of professional staff at the GS-12 grade, including advanced practice social workers and social worker program coordinators. They are responsible for the professional and administrative management of an area in a social work service, in a care line, or across multiple sites, e.g., multi-division facilities and CBOCs with a large number of supervises at the GS-12 grade and below. They typically also provide direct clinical services.
Experience, Education and Licensure: Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for subordinate staff to qualify for licensure. Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (b) below.

Physical Requirements:The work is primarily non-strenuous though a significant amount of walking is required for face to face contact with patients, family members and medical staff. Ability to life 5-10 pounds, mostly documents and/or binders is required. The ability to sit for 1-2 hours, and do substantial computer work.
