The Electronic Systems Segment (ESS) provides a broad range of aerospace systems, security and detection systems, and pilot training.

L3 Combat Propulsion Systems (CPS) located in Muskegon, MI is a recognized market leader in the engineering, design and manufacture of engines, transmissions, suspension and turret drive systems for combat vehicles, including both tracked and wheeled vehicles. It is also a production center for Abrams tank components and supports both domestic and international vehicle customers, including programs for Singapore and South Korea.

The 2019 Summer Operational Excellence intern will be assigned 2-3 key improvement projects that impact Strategic Goal TTI’s (Targets to Improve) with the expectation of substantial improvement over the initial baseline. The results of the assigned projects will be reported out upon completion of the internship. Using a data driven approach, this position will assist in separating the ‘trivial many’ to help better allocate resources to address the ‘vital few’. In addition, this incumbent would assist the Manufacturing and Operational Excellence team in:

  • Improving the “New Product Introduction” process (streamline the process flow from Initial Concept Conception to Low Rate Initial Production)

  • Value Stream Mapping current state to define future state

  • Using CAD / Simulation software, present optimized equipment layouts that result in reduced lead-times by increasing process, material and information flow

  • Aid in facilitating Kaizen / TPM events to help fulfill our strategic Roadmap.

  • Understand and assist in the Strategic Goal Deployment process and assist where / when applicable

  • Present new innovative ideas that improve flow, ideally with minimal capital investment

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • An Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering or Technology

  • Junior or Senior status

  • Understanding of Lean, Six Sigma and SPC methods

  • Ability to manage and organize multiple project tasks to meet deadlines

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Must be willing to travel (domestic and foreign) up to 10%

  • Must be able to move freely within the manufacturing and lab environment with reasonable accommodation

  • Must be familiar with, and able to utilize all Microsoft Office Applications.

  • Must welcome change and have a continuous improvement state of mind

  • Must be able to move freely, with or without accommodation throughout the manufacturing environment

Preferred Skills or Experience:

  • Background in machining processes, tooling, equipment and CNC technology.

  • Industrial simulation software experience

  • Demonstrated technical ability through a high GPA (3.0 minimum).

  • Working knowledge of Minitab or other statistics program

  • Bill of Material structures

  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

  • Machine fixture concepts

  • How to work within a union environment

  • Preference will be given to local candidates
