Mission

History

Originally established by the SF Sheriff’s Department (2003) as the first charter school in the nation to operate inside of a county jail, today Five Keys is a nationally recognized education management (non-profit) corporation that operates accredited charter schools and programs for TAY youth and adults at 70 locations across California.

Five Keys operates with the goal of restoring communities through education and other programs that respond to the students’ and community needs---which in turn creates safer communities. Five Keys provides a range of educational programs and services including: high school diploma, career and technical education, digital literacy, ESL, cognitive behavioral, recovery programs, case management, correctional education consulting and college access to transitional aged youth and adults in six California counties.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide direct instruction to students with disabilities on all areas of their ITP (Individualized Transition Plan)

  • Provide student workshops in the areas of: interviewing techniques, workplace culture, food handling, career development, career exploration, employability skills and job retention

  • Facilitate job orientations and provide on-site vocational skills support, worksite evaluations and task analysis

  • Administer career assessments and career interest inventories to promote self-evaluation

  • Collaborate with Department of Rehabilitation, Regional Centers and other community agencies to support student goal of obtaining integrated, competitive employment

  • Handling workshops on conflict resolution for students and staff

  • Assess youth’s educational status/goals and identify areas in need of improvement to create a transition plan that focus on on educational attainment, employment and avoidance of homelessness, incarceration and high risk behaviors

  • Assist with preparing for graduation, post-graduation education, employment, housing, emancipation, and sealing juvenile records while promoting long term positive outcomes.

  • Write appropriate transition goals and develop instructional program supports for special education students in the area of transition planning.

  • Assist youth with accessing available funding, scholarships, grants and workshops relating to their goals

  • Ability to maintain strong and appropriate boundaries with personal identifying information when interacting with students or community or program partners, and while at any school location or community or program partner site

  • Serve as a liaison between school and internship/volunteer sites

  • Help students create and implement a person centered plan during the IEP process.

  • Coordinate monthly career exploration and vocational trips to expose students to post-secondary options

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, and sitting

  • Frequent talking and hearing conversations

  • Occasional reaching with hands and arms

  • Occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds

  • Ability to follow oral directions in emergency situations

  • Travel to multiple sites required

  • Clear TB test results dated within 60 days of hire to be submitted within 10 days of hire required

  • Must be willing and able to work in a correctional facility and travel throughout the area to community sites

  • Work environment varies from site to site. There is some personal safety risk working with the at-risk population

  • Moderate noise level

Required Experience:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Basic operations, services, and activities of special education programs

  • IEP/ITP planning process and continuum of program options

  • Instructional methodologies and strategies used to teach students with special education needs

  • Principles of behavioral management and curriculum development appropriate for special education students

  • Principles and procedures of transitional assessment and evaluation

  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations

  • Recent developments, current literature, and sources of information related to special education services, planning, and administration

  • Provide professional development for staff in order to facilitate implementation of instructional methodologies, curriculum materials, and current trends within special education

  • Assess and evaluate program effectiveness and analyze for compliance

  • Understand and interpret pertinent State Education and Administrative codes, policies, and procedures

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public

  • Exceptional written communication skills; ability to express complex ideas with clarity and precision in written documents

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

This position typically requires:

  • Minimum of three years of special educational experience including at least two years of experience working with transitional age youth

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
