Job Summary

NREL operates as a living laboratory by implementing strategies and technologies in its facilities and studying the adoption and effectiveness through participation by campus staff. By utilizing the Intelligent Campus Program as both an environment and energy informatics platform we foster situational awareness, engagement, and understanding of energy accountability among lab staff and visitors. By leveraging NREL research and integrating the campus infrastructure NREL is creating a testbed environment for industry and government adoption to catalyze replicable processes for market. Real-world application provides valuable information that enhances the outcome of the research deployable to multiple scales.

The Intelligent Campus team is seeking a qualified intern to support multiple advanced analytics and control projects for NREL campus assets, including buildings, central heating and cooling plants, photovoltaic generation plants, energy storage equipment, and electric vehicle service equipment. The intern may perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • System administration for NREL’s energy management and information system

  • Manual and automated data intake for NREL’s energy management and information system

  • Manual and automated data organization and semantic modeling for NREL campus assets

  • Rule design, programming, deployment, and tuning for automated fault detection and diagnosis

  • Design, implementation, and testing of forecasting and advanced control algorithms for demand management

  • Design and programming of embedded control logic for NREL campus assets

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: Before interview selection, you will need to provide unofficial transcripts to verify GPA and full time enrollment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be an M.S. or Ph.D. student in a relevant Engineering, Science, or Mathematics field. The candidate will have experience with building control systems and equipment, programming, and data management.

  • Enrolled in an M.S. or Ph.D. program with a curriculum focus on building controls, systems, and equipment

  • Prior experience with energy management and information systems

  • Prior experience with databases and data management tools

  • Prior experience with Project Haystack standard for semantic modeling of building assets

  • Prior experience with SkySpark software, including programming in the Axon scripting language

  • Strong programming skills and familiarity with at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, Python, Ruby

  • Strong analysis and software troubleshooting skills

  • Building control system and/or embedded system programming experience

  • System administration skills and prior experience with Linux operating system
