Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Physical Education and Recreation is among the three largest departments in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and is home to two degree programs: Physical Education and Recreation Administration, with concentrations and a new undergraduate program in Sports Medicine being planned at this time. The graduate program has two programs as well, Physical Education and Recreation Administration. The department currently has 19 full-time faculty serving more than 500 students. Strong collaborations with the Department of Athletics, Campus Recreation and more than 150 school and internship sites support student success and faculty scholarship.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Physical Education and Recreation is seeking to fill a ten-month tenure-track position at the Associate/Full Professor rank with administrative responsibilities as Department Chair starting July 1, 2018. Without chair responsibilities, the position reverts to a regular 9 month faculty position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Responsibilities for all faculty at North Carolina Central University include teaching, research, and service. The Chair’s responsibilities include (but not limited to): overseeing and reviewing curriculum development; initiating new academic programs, recruiting and retaining students, coordinating student advising, reviewing student academic appeals and grievances, supervising and evaluating faculty and staff performance, providing leadership and management of faculty and staff, supervising the usage of the facility, leading strategic planning, managing budget and resources, implementing curricular changes, supervising faculty and staff, leading new faculty appointments, mentoring, overseeing the promotion and tenure process, teaching in area of expertise, engaging in scholarly research, and advancing University’s mission.
Earned doctorate, with an academic degree in Physical Education, Recreation or related field. The candidate must have a substantial record of successful teaching, scholarship and service that places the candidate at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, eligible for tenure; successful academic administrative experience, evidence of the ability to lead strategic planning, and innovatively implement projects and programs, evidence of exceptional interpersonal skills and evidence of a commitment to engagement in the community and to diversity and equity. Candidates with administrative experience and a track record of creativity and innovation in managing a multidisciplinary unit; a track record of external support (i.e. grants/contracts/fund-raising) community partnerships; expertise in motor development and motor learning, experience with interdisciplinary collaboration, and program assessment and accreditation will be given preference.
