The corporate title for this position is “Sr Analyst, Pricing”

This opening may be filled at either the Sr Analyst or Analyst level, depending on the qualifications and related experience of the chosen applicant, and may be filled in Columbus, OH or Des Moines, IA.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • At least 3 actuarial exams passed for Sr Analyst level; at least 1 for Analyst level

  • Degree in actuarial science/mathematics/statistics or related field, such as economics

  • At least 2 years’ actuarial/statistical experience for Sr Analyst level; Internship or other experience with hands-on actuarial/statistical/related work for Analyst level

  • Strong analytic and problem solving skills

  • The ability to be self-directed in ambiguous situations

  • Strong communication skills to be able to interact verbally and in writing with business partners and other departments, including state departments of insurance

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, preferably including practical experience or familiarity with VBA, SAS, and/or Brio.

JOB SUMMARY: Prepares loss, expense, and premium data for actuarial pricing reviews and/or ratemaking; estimates future loss and premium results. Exhibits working knowledge of company systems, databases, applications, business, policies, practices and regulations. Works under regular guidance from a manager or senior analyst to execute actuarial models, complete rate revisions, filings and indications, extract info from databases, manipulate spreadsheets and communicate results to Product Managers and others.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Supervisor/Manager/Director/OfficerCORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Continues to develop more advanced knowledge of data sources and requirements; retrieves and manipulates data.2. Continues to develop knowledge of actuarial methodologies via actual work assignments.3. Conducts analyses that adhere to actuarial standards of practice: selects appropriate data sources and methods, makes assumptions, recognizes considerations and develops recommendations.4. Documents assumptions, methods, sources, considerations; organizes documents.5. Notes unreasonable results/non-optimal solutions and assists in resolution.6. Prepares memos, documents, and letters as needed. Communications are to be concise, logical, organized, and grammatically correct with the appropriate level of technical terms suitable to the audience. Recipient of documents may include internal and external parties including regulatory bodies.7. Develops personal work schedule to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks; coordinates with others when tasks involve others.8. Recognizes and begins to develop relationships within and outside of Pricing which are critical to completion of assigned tasks. May make presentations to Home Office and Regional audiences.9. Builds and validates statistical/actuarial models to enhance rating and/or underwriting. Monitors the effectiveness of statistical/actuarial rating and/or underwriting models.10. Participates in Peer Tech Reviews. Reviews work of peers and also has work reviewed by them. May assist with training new associates on standard work procedures.11. Accuracy and attention to detail is required. Participates in ad hoc analyses. More complex work is reviewed. Under appropriate supervision, applies data mining techniques to discover new relationships in the data. Participates in the project planning process. Develops proficiency with statistical modeling software.12. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Education: Bachelors degree (preferred) in actuarial science, business, finance, mathematics, statistics, economics or related field with a strong quantitative orientation.Experience: Minimum two years experience in a business unit (e.g., pricing, actuarial, product) or combined experience and educational equivalent.Knowledge: Knowledge of mathematics, statistics, probability, and/or principles of finance, proven analytical skills and familiarity with insurance products and terminology as well as legal and regulatory requirements in area of assignment. Continuing to learn more advanced actuarial methodologies and insurance concepts through reading, training sessions and work assignments.Skills/Competencies: Demonstrated work product accuracy. Effective verbal/written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to comprehend actuarial concepts and other advanced statistical concepts; Demonstrated ability to think logically and perform actuarial methods in a timely manner. Ability to effectively operate personal computer and related spreadsheets and data base software.
