GENERAL SUMMARY :

Acts as technical information resource for Mercy Clinical

Laboratory.

Identifies problems that may adversely affect test

performance and/or results and uses knowledge, critical thinking skills, and

judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them.

May be assigned to assume the duties of a charge technologist. Performs

tasks and procedures specific to assigned department with minimal supervision.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS :

  • Uses educational and technical expertise totroubleshoot issues related to specimen quality, instrument/method performanceand analytical interferences to ensure patient results match clinical status.

  • Assists and supports quality management systemsand performance improvement initiatives. Utilizes LEAN principles/productivitystandards.

  • Works independently, organizing work to meetestablished deadlines and records.

  • Maintains supply inventories.

  • Trains new employees and acts as a preceptor formedical laboratory science students.

  • Operates laboratory information systems, personalcomputers, and instrument-related computer software.

  • Provides exceptional customer service tointernal and external customers.

Functions specific to West Lakes Lab, Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistryand Microbiology Sections:

  • Performs complex laboratory procedures utilizedfor the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age toinclude neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults;recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problemsusing scientific principles.

  • Analyzes quality control data, makes judgmentsconcerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracyand precision.

  • Performs preventive maintenance and basictroubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.

  • Performs new instrument or procedureimplementation and training.

  • May be assigned to assume duties of chargetechnologist in absence of supervisor/manager.

Functions specific to Technical Resolution Section:

  • Serves as technicalresource for tests referred from Mercy Clinical Laboratory to othertesting facilities.

  • Scans or enters send-outtesting reports into LIS and maintains standing orders for outreachpatients/clients.

  • Performs billing functionsincluding but not limited to:entering test charges & credits and proper diagnosis codes whenprovided by client.

  • Ensures timely follow-upof customer complaints, issues and need for redraws.

  • Documents all contact madewith client in client services incident management system.

  • Rectifies registration errorson outreach patients such as updating/correcting demographic information,updating “bill to” information, and ensuring patient report is issuedunder correct registration account.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in Chemistry, Biology or related field.

  • One-year clinical internship in a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited clinical laboratory science program or approved alternate career path that meets certification eligibility requirements.

  • Certification in one of the following:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

  • Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

  • Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).

  • A person may be hired into this position if he/she has completed the educational requirements and is eligible for the certification exam. The exam must be successfully completed within six (6) months of hire.
