Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director of Professional Development provides vision, leadership and operational management for this unit within Undergraduate Programs in the Belk College. The Director of Professional Development works collaboratively with the Director of Academic and Career Coaching and reports directly to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs.

The Director of Professional Development engages in short-term and long-term planning and manages the budget and the activities of the unit to achieve goals related to professional development for all undergraduate students in the Belk College. Activities of the unit include ones designed to support specific underrepresented populations. This person guides overall visioning and goal setting for the unit and directs the creation and delivery of innovative programming to achieve student engagement and self-discovery and to improve student career-related competencies. The Director leads efforts within the unit to cultivate and manage employer relationships for the purpose of strengthening internship opportunities for students and to support relationships with key community partners. The Director is responsible for conducting assessment of the unit and reporting results. The Director of Professional Development partners extensively with the Director of Academic and Career Coaching. The Director of Professional Development also forges relationships, coordinates, and works collaboratively with Department Chairs, External Relations staff, Graduate Programs staff, and other faculty and staff in the Belk College and with other campus units, including the University Career Center. The Director is responsible for all marketing, programs, publications, events, and decisions made on behalf of the unit. The Director hires, trains and supervises the unit’s professional staff and any graduate assistants and student workers. Responsibilities within the unit also include instructing internship for credit courses and supporting established undergraduate student programs (including the Business Honors, Belk Scholars, Business Learning Community and Women in Business programs).

Minimum Experience / Education:

The Director must possess a graduate degree in business or higher education or a related field (including but not limited to human resources, academic counseling, business administration, public administration, or higher education administration) from an appropriately accredited institution. A degree in business or relevant business experience is needed. The Director must have experience in career counseling, career planning, student development, academic advising or another student services-centered position in a university setting. Experience developing and implementing employment, career or professional development programs is required. A minimum of 5 years of proven leadership experience, successfully organizing and managing an office, unit or program and experience directly supervising professional staff, is needed, along with experience developing accountability goals and metrics, conducting assessments and reporting results. Experience with career assessment tools, knowledge of the job search process and current trends, and coordination of large and small special events is necessary. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of bringing creative and innovative ideas into practice. Candidates should provide evidence of adaptability and flexibility. This position requires excellent analytical thinking and organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituents. Successful candidates will exhibit strong oral and written skills and the ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and business professionals. Candidate must display a professional demeanor and positive attitude.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

University administration, university teaching experience, and educational program assessment is preferred. Career advising of undergraduate level business students is highly desirable and direct knowledge of professional development for business students, and experience with college internships and job placement for business students is strongly preferred.
