Volvo Group Intern: Packaging Engineer (Fall 2018) in Byhalia, Mississippi

Logistics Operations Americas is part of GTO and has approximately 1,000 employees in more than 20 locations within the region. Our job is to design, handle and optimize the supply chain for all Volvo Group brands. The scope for Logistics Services includes making sure material is delivered to the production facilities, packaging is available, vehicles are distributed to the dealers, and that management of material, warehouses and distribution ensures the availability of parts everywhere in the world. We have exciting opportunities for the right individuals at our 1,000,000 SF central Distribution Center in Byhalia, MS. The new Byhalia DC is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Memphis, TN.

Purpose of the Position

The Packaging Engineering internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a professional environment, and to promote the graduate’s career goals through contact with professionals in their field of study. The internship experience enables students to participate in professional activities for the Volvo Byhalia, Columbus facility by working on important and innovative projects.

The internship role will start in the Fall of 2018 as a part-time position with a target of 20 hours per week. The specific work days and hours will be flexible, but agreed upon with the hiring manager.

Professional Objectives

  • Weekly writing assignments; brief written summaries of the learning experiences and project updates will be required

  • Project Presentations: Formal project presentations will be required to be presented to peers, management, and senior leaders within the organization

  • Mentor Feedback: Throughout the entire summer experience, the mentor will provide verbal and written feedback on performance

  • Formal Written Performance Review: At the end of the internship, each intern will be given a formal written evaluation based on their work performance

Project Objectives

  • Develop SOPs

  • Develop packaging instruction BRNDS Truck, VCE, PENTA and MACK

  • Create time plan for projects in Operational Support department

  • Support to develop KPI’s for OPS (Engineers)

  • Implement projects focus on (SQDCEP)

  • Support on development reports

  • Project BNP set up to new packaging requirements for branding purposes

  • Cost reductions on material changes or design of new packaging working with material suppliers

  • Working with IPS Group on material specifications and new designs and storage of material specifications

  • Purchase orders for services and packaging materials for 3PL

  • Projects on cost reductions dealing with aged material and cycle counts and required adjustments to material stock

  • Support transit damage charge backs dealing with packaging and required with hired services from 3PL

  • Space creation based on packaging and pack configuration

  • Work with other Volvo sites to develop best practices dealing with packaging and quality

  • Ability to use and operate all warehouse systems required to form daily tasks

  • Adhere to environmental requirements dealing with packaging

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Applicants should be interested in a professional career as a Logistic Engineer, Industrial Engineer at a warehouse or manufacturing facility

  • Applicants must be pursing and enrolled in an Engineering degree at an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours prior to the start of the internship

  • Applicants should also have a working knowledge of MS Excel, Computer Aided Drafting programs, and methods analysis, AutoCAD software
