The incumbent is a rotating, generalized pharmacy technician, directly involved in all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items from both inpatient and outpatient areas of pharmacy.

Work Schedule:Mon - Fri, weekends and holidays; (day, evening, and night); 7:00am-3:30pm, 3:30pm-11:00pm, and 8:00pm-7:00am. (Must be able to rotate to any shift.)

  • Rotates to different assigned areas and is directly involved in all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items.
  • Fills unit-dose carts, performs final review of medication (prepared by another technician) to be dispensed to inpatient areas (unit dose carts).
  • Perform record keeping for filing and cleaning schedule of unit-dose cassettes.
  • Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment such as: Pharmopack Packager, automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis), outpatient automation (Scriptpro), IV hoods (laminar flow, barrier isolator, containment isolator).
  • Prepares prescriptions for final check by pharmacist for processing; processes batch refill prescription ordering for mail-out processing and fulfillment of patient requests; dispenses completed medication orders directly to patients/representatives.
  • Prepares and fills Pyxis orders and requests for ward stock and controlled substances as required; receives new stock and returned stock into inventory by ensuring accuracy of controlled drug records.
  • Completes sterile and non-sterile compounding. Makes IV and chemotherapy in accordance with USP Chapters 797 and 800. Makes non-sterile compounds in accordance to USP Chapter 795.

Occasional travel - Travel between Uptown and Downtown Divisions may be required.

Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements and specialized experience, applicants at this grade level must demonstrate the following (KSAs) knowledge, skills, and abilities. If selected for the position KSAs need to be completed on plain paper, with a narrative description of experience, education and training as related to each skill.

For GS-6 Grade level

Experience:Must have one (1) year of experience at the next lower grade level (GS-5) andmust fully meet KSAs at the next lower grade level.

Experience must have included, but is not limited to the following:a basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature; characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals; compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents; compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products; inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts; and operation and care of automated equipment.

Preferred Experience: 1-2 years of prior hospital experience.

Certification:National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) You must be able to demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) based on your application for this position.You will be required to address each KSA in writing if selected.

  1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
  2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
  3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
  4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
  5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
  6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
